Boiler won't fire up? Run through these checks first
Before you book an engineer, work through power, gas, pressure and thermostat checks. Around half the 'boiler won't turn on' call-outs we attend turn out to be one of those four basics.
Common causes
1. No power
Check the fused spur next to the boiler, plus the consumer unit. A wobbly spur is surprisingly common.
2. Gas off
Check the meter is on and other gas appliances (hob, fire) work.
3. Pressure too low
Below 0.5 bar most boilers lock out. Top up via the filling loop.
4. Thermostat or controls fault
Dead batteries in a wireless stat will stop the boiler firing. Swap the AAs and retry.
Try these first
- Check the fused spur (usually next to the boiler).
- Top up boiler pressure if it's below 1 bar.
- Replace thermostat batteries.
- Try the boiler's manual reset button (usually a flame symbol).
